Junction Mine, Broken Hill

We spent several days at the Silver City in NSW. I was fascinated by the ruins of BHP’s old Junction Mine and Brown’s Shaft. I took a number of photos.

You could not write a history of Broken Hill without writing about the mines and their boom and bust history. The Broken Hill lode was a massive orebody of high–grade ore containing lead, zinc and silver.

Olary

Olary is an old railway town on the Barrier Highway in South Australia. We passed it on the way to Adelaide from Broken Hill. Its future may well depend on mining—-on the area around it being a new frontier for the development of magnetitie iron ore.

Cape Willoughby

We stayed several days in a lighthouse cottage at Cape Willoughby on our last trip to Kangaroo Island. It was a wonderful location as it was possible to walk down to these great rock formations from the white stone cottage.

The city as labyrinth

Wandering the streets in corporate Melbourne can result in a sense of an endless, disorientated walking in a labyrinth. The city takes the form of a labyrinth, emerging at the intersection of reflective surfaces in which internal and external surfaces are collapsed and their boundaries become blurred. There is a sense of an infinite mirroring that leads to an abyss.

I’d been on a photoshoot with Stuart Murdoch. It was at the end of a summer’s day and we were going for a quick bite to eat before I caught the train to back to Safety Beach The facade of this building in a carpark was the remains of an old factory, the name of which I cannot remember. Stuart advises that it was the Sunshine Harvester Factory.

Bolte Bridge, Melbourne
The freeways and overpasses are few and far between in Adelaide. So I scoot across to Melbourne to photograph them.

On this occasion I spent a day photographing the overpasses that were a part of the Bolt Bridge. It was very hot and muggy that day and I huddled in the shade of the overpasses for several hours waiting for the cloud cover to come over. It never came. So I made some pictures and left.

Point Nepean National Park

From an exploration of the Point Nepean National Park with Stuart Murdoch. The concrete bunkers are from WW2 and they are at the entrance of Port Philip Bay. They were there to protect Melbourne from the Japanese. The Japanese only got as far south as Sydney.

We did a drive to the east coast of Tasmania from Evandale via the Blue Tier Forest to St Helens in an old diesel Mercedes and we stopped for lunch at Leake on our return from the coast. I wandered around the town and I took a few pictures.
